FEAR ITSELF…
"We have nothing to fear but fear itself," credited to when he uttered these famous words during one of his inaugural speeches. In fact here is the paragraph from the speech.
“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself -- nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”
Looking at the date of the speech, 1933, and reading a bit further into Roosevelt's address, we realized that he was referring to the economic conditions of the time -- in other words, The Great Depression. He was essentially saying, "if we can't shake our pessimistic economic outlook, it will be tough to turn things around." President Roosevelt was calling for a little irrational exuberance...
Today, the word FEAR is a very different matter. FEAR, what does it mean and why does this simple four-letter word today, trigger and open so many floodgates in our world?
FEAR is something we are born with. The FEAR of fire and falling are the two natural fears that we arrive in the world with. All others are man or woman-
made. I believe all know that more people are killed each year in traffic accidents, but do we take precautions in our driving skills? You know the facts on our over crowded roads and adjust accordingly. We know the consequences if we make a mistake. When someone is acting as God, in the ability to choose a target and take a life, you can’t comprehend the mind-set of such an individual. That is FEAR!
The World Trade Center and the loss of over 2800 people instilled that four letter word. Life went on as normal that fateful day and prior to 8:46 a.m. nobody ever dreamed of such an attack. That day FEAR gripped America and the rest of the world. The FEAR of flying or travel, Arabic looking individuals and the FEAR of anything that could harm us in our own Homeland, it is imprinted in all our minds.
Today though, it might as well be September 10th 2001, Americans have no idea of the hatred being placed against or the planning in the works for more attacks against our nation. Law enforcement is working 24/7 to maintain our security, but it takes more than that. It is impossible to stop a terrorist without as much intelligent information from the general public. There is no magic system that can contain and stop the possible bomb attacks against.
Just like your driving techniques on the roads, you must plan to protect your work place, the building you work in, the place you park your car and yes, you need to look over your shoulder at all times. If you hear or see something out of the ordinary, you must report it. I know you are thinking that if you are wrong it will be an inconvenience, it is not! If you didn’t report it and something happened, how would you feel then? On the other hand we must go about life as normal.
Travelling has become more or a hassle than ever before and we must reduce the Fear Factor and Increase the Comfort Zone by all doing our part. It is not going to get any better if we leave it as is. Changes will be made for your protection and it is not Big Brother sticking it to you! Travel Registration and Indentification is coming and coming very soon. We have to be PROACTIVE and sustain the Status Quo!
Geographically, most Americans are challenged. Just because you don’t know where a place is located, doesn’t mean the event that took place can’t happen here. Yes, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan are a worlds away; terrorism is on your doorstep, protective measures need to be enacted now! You may not be able to stop the bombing itself, but you can reduce the collateral damage and save lives.
If you think you are safe in Middle America, think again. It can happen anywhere. Are you prepared or are you suffering from the Ostrich Syndrome? That is burying your head in the sand and blocking out all that is around.
Bluntly, you are more of a target with your posterior in the air!
